Kimberly Byrd offers the first complete modern edition of the Latin text of the original (1561) edition of Gilles’ De Topographia Constantinopoleos, et de illius Antiquitatibus Libri Quatuor. This is published in two forms: as a print paperback and as downloadable and fully searchable PDF file. As far as possible, the editor has carried over its book and chapter divisions and has matched the paragraph divisions of the Renaissance Latin into a modern edition.
This fine edition presents a fresh and important addition to the scholarship on Constantinople, its ancient heritage, and to the evolving study and practice of classical archaeology in Renaissance Europe.
